San Diego County Crime Stoppers is working with investigators from the San Diego Regional Fraud Task Force and asking for assistance from the public in locating Mario Chavez. Chavez is wanted in connection with a series of crimes involving the passing of counterfeit U.S. currency throughout San Diego County. Chavez targets sellers offering mobile phones for sale on sites such as “Offer Up”, “Let Go” and classified ads posted on “Craigslist”. Chavez makes contact with the seller through the app or by texting. Chavez will agree to a price and pays for the mobile device in cash. In most cases, the victim does not discover the money they received from Chavez was counterfeit until after Chavez has already left with the device. Chavez is known to use force or flee if confronted by a seller. 

Mario Kevin Chavez is a Hispanic male, 27-years-old, 6’3” tall, weighs 295 lbs., and has brown hair and brown eyes.

Ten-Year Anniversary of the Unsolved Murder of Salvador Hernandez

San Diego County Crime Stoppers, working with the San Diego Police Department’s Homicide Unit, continues to seek information about the unsolved murder of Salvador Hernandez.

On February 16, 2008, at approximately 3:30 a.m., 26-year-old Salvador Hernandez and a female companion were inside a parked car in the 5500 block of Seifert Street in the neighborhood of Oak Park. An unknown older model, light colored pick-up truck pulled alongside Salvador’s vehicle. An occupant of that vehicle shot Salvador and his companion. The companion survived the shooting but Salvador died as a result of his injuries.

Salvador’s family will be available for interviews today at 1:00 p.m., in front of San Diego Police Department’s Headquarters, located at 1401 Broadway, San Diego.

Homicide Unit Lt. Mike Holden will also be available for interviews.

Suspect Wanted for Commercial Armed Robberies

Up to $1,000 Reward Offered  

San Diego County Crime Stoppers along with investigators from the San Diego Police Department’s Robbery Unit are asking for the public’s help in identifying and locating an unknown suspect wanted for two separate commercial armed robberies in San Diego.   

On February 8, 2018, at about 5:35 a.m., an unknown male suspect robbed the Adult Depot located at 4055 Pacific Highway, in San Diego.   

On February 9, 2018, at about 4:25 a.m., the same suspect robbed the 7-Eleven located at 4919 University Avenue, in San Diego. 

In both cases the suspect walked into the businesses armed with a shotgun, and demanded money from the registers.

The suspect is described as a Hispanic male, 20 to 30-years-old, 6’0” to 6’2” tall, weighs 230 to 250 lbs., with dark colored hair and eyes.  The suspect was wearing a black baseball cap, dark colored pants, and white tennis shoes during both of the robberies.  During one of the robberies, the suspect was wearing a dark colored hooded sweatshirt with “GIJOE” printed on the front. 

Suspect’s Vehicle:

In both cases, the suspect fled the area in a dark colored, 4-door sedan (possibly a 2000-2006 Nissan Sentra) with black wheels and a broken out driver’s side window.

11 YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF JODINE SERRIN’S VALENTINES’ DAY MURDER

REWARD OF $52,000 BEING OFFERED

The Carlsbad Police Department, San Diego County District Attorney’s Office and San Diego County Crime Stoppers are asking for the public’s assistance for any information about the unsolved murder of Jodine Serrin. There is a combined reward of $52,000 in this case.   

On February 14, 2007, Jodine Elizabeth Serrin, a 39-year-old, mentally challenged woman, was found murdered in her Carlsbad condominium located in the 1900 Block of Swallow Lane. Jodine was a highly functioning young woman active in the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill, Mariposa Club, and Friends Club House. Last year, on the tenth anniversary of Jodine’s murder, investigators released a new website dedicated to the Cold Case Investigation and new suspect information based on the first use of new forensic technology in San Diego County.  

Last year, investigators from the Carlsbad Police Department and San Diego County District Attorney’s Office sought the services of Parabon NanoLabs (Parabon), a DNA technology company in Virginia that specializes in DNA phenotyping: the process of predicting physical appearance and ancestry from unidentified DNA evidence. Law enforcement agencies use the company’s Snapshot ™ DNA Phenotyping Service (Snapshot) to narrow suspect lists and generate leads in criminal investigations. 

Using DNA evidence from this investigation, Snapshot produced trait predictions for the associated person of interest (POI). Individual predictions were made for the subject’s ancestry, eye color, hair color, skin color, freckling, and face shape. By combining these attributes of appearance, a Snapshot composite was produced depicting what the POI may have looked like in 2007.  Estimated age and body-mass index (BMI) based on witness information were used because age and BMI cannot be determined from DNA.  

It is important to note that Snapshot composites are scientific approximations of appearance based on DNA, and are not likely to be exact replicas of appearance. Environmental factors such as smoking, drinking, diet, and other non-environmental factors — e.g., facial hair, hairstyle, scars, etc. — cannot be predicted by DNA analysis and may cause further variation between the subject’s predicted and actual appearances.

Investigators from the San Marcos Sheriff's Station are asking for the public’s help in identifying and locating a suspect wanted for a commercial armed robbery of a donut shop in San Marc0s.

On February 1, 2018 at approximately 1:30 a.m., a suspect walked into the Yum Yum Donuts located at 1240 East Mission Road in San Marcos. The suspect pointed a black semi-automatic handgun at the employee and demanded money from the cash register.

The suspect is described as a black man, approximately 25-30 years old, standing 5'8" tall and weighing 180 pounds with a thin build and medium brown complexion. His ears are pierced and he had a key chain around his neck. The suspect was last seen wearing a gray beanie, dark jacket, black shirt, dark blue jeans and white tennis shoes.

The suspect is considered armed and dangerous.

WANTED: Suspect Re sponsible for Grand Theft from Vehicle, and Credit Card and Identity Theft

San Diego County Crime Stoppers and investigators from the Poway Sheriff’s Station are asking for the public's help to locate an unknown suspect wanted in connection with car burglary, using a stolen credit card, and identity theft. 

On January 1, 2018, at about 9:15 p.m., an unknown suspect took a backpack from a vehicle that was parked in front of a home in the 12900 block of Rios Road in Poway.  The backpack contained a wallet, an Apple laptop, and a google cell phone which was later recovered by sheriff’s deputies, in the middle of a nearby street.  

At about 11:00 p.m., two of the victim's credit cards were fraudulently used at a Circle K/Mobile gas station, located at 14863 Pomerado Road by an unknown male suspect. The suspect was driving a newer model blue Chevrolet sedan with unknown plates

Suspect Description: The suspect is described as a White adult male. He was last seen wearing glasses, a dark colored Nike polo shirt and light blue jeans.

Unknown Suspect(s) Wanted for Trailer Theft

San Diego County Crime Stoppers and investigators from the Santee Sheriff’s Station are asking for the public's help to identify and locate an unknown suspect or suspects wanted in connection with the theft or a trailer that was parked behind a business in Santee. 

Sometime between the evening of January 23, 2018 and 5:00 a.m. on January 24, 2018, an unknown suspect(s) stole a trailer that was parked behind The Coffee Corner coffee shop, located 9608 Carlton Hills Blvd in Santee. The owner estimates the loss of the trailer and its contents at about $18,000.

The trailer is described as a 2012 5’x12’ Interstate enclosed trailer with California license plate 4MC8836. The trailer is black with red decal letters on three sides spelling out The Coffee Corner.

Unknown Suspect(s) Wanted for Burglary

an Diego County Crime Stoppers and investigators from the North Coastal Sheriff’s Station are asking for the public's help to identify and locate an unknown suspect or suspects wanted in connection with a residential burglary that occurred in Encinitas.  

On August 4, 2017 between 2:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m., an unknown suspect or suspects gained entry into a residence, located on the 600 block of Rancho Santa Fe Road in Encinitas, by removing a screen from an open window. The suspect(s) stole jewelry, name brand handbags and sunglasses, and clothing to include Indian saris. The estimated total loss is more than $150,000. 

The reward in this case has been increased to up to $5,000 to anyone that provides information that leads to a felony arrest.

Unsolved Homicide of Emmanuelle “Benji” Thomas

Up to $1,000 Reward Offered

San Diego County Crime Stoppers and investigators from the Oceanside Police Department’s Crimes of Violence Unit are asking for the public’s help in identifying the suspect(s) responsible for the murder of Emmanuelle “Benji” Thomas.

On Friday, June 30, 2017, at about 1:00 a.m., Oceanside police officers responded to a call of a person down in the alley to the rear of 325 S. Coast Highway in Oceanside. When police officers arrived, several people stated that they had found the victim on the ground. The victim, who was later identified as 20-year-old Emmanuelle “Benji” Thomas, was unconscious and suffering from serious head trauma. He was transported to a local hospital where he died from his injuries.

Detectives do not believe that this was a random act and are investigating the possibility that Emmanuelle “Benji” Thomas, who was homeless, was sleeping when he was attacked.

Suspects Wanted for Commercial Armed Robbery

Up to $1,000 Reward Offered  

Investigators from the San Diego Police Department's Robbery Unit are asking for the public’s help in locating two suspects wanted for a commercial armed robbery of a Savers 99 Cents Store located in the Mid-City area of San Diego.   

On December 13, 2017, at approximately 1:30 p.m., Irene Lee and Ariel Burrus walked into the Savers 99 Cents Store located at 4129 University Avenue, in San Diego. Lee shoplifted several items while Burrus acted as a lookout for her.  Both suspects went to the checkout counter and Lee pretended as if she was going to pay for just one item. An employee blocked the exit of the store and demanded that Lee show him what she had taken. Neither Lee nor Burrus would cooperate. Burrus tried shoving her way past the employee, but was unsuccessful. Burrus then pulled out a small caliber revolver from the back of her waistband and pointed it at the back of the employee’s head. 

Burrus cocked back the hammer of the gun, and told the employee “let us go.” The employee was able to turn, tackle Burrus to the ground, and took the gun away from her. Lee tried kicking the employee while he was on the ground. Burrus demanded the gun back and told the employee that she will come back and kill him. The employee held onto the gun and both suspects left the store before police officers arrived. Investigators were able to identify both suspects from evidence recovered at the scene.

WANTED: Suspect Responsible for Credit Card and Identity Theft

San Diego County Crime Stoppers and investigators from the Santee Sheriff’s Station are asking for the public's help to locate an unknown suspect wanted in connection with using a stolen credit card and identity theft. 

On October 31, 2017, an unknown male suspect used a stolen credit card at several businesses in the city of Santee to include the Walmart located at Parkway Plaza, the 7-11 located at 375 W. Madison Ave, and the Target store located at 250 Broadway.  The suspect used the stolen credit card to purchase food, electronics, and other high priced items. The total amount charged to the stolen credit card was approximately $800.00

The suspect is known to frequent the Santee area and usually purchases Bugler brand tobacco and rolling papers.  He also uses a skateboard for transportation.

 Suspect Description: The suspect is described as a White or Hispanic male, between 25 to 35-years-old.  He was last seen wearing a black or navy hooded sweatshirt, black fitted hat, black pants, black Chuck Taylor tennis shoes, and a black and white lanyard around his neck.

WANTED: Suspect Responsible for Vehicle Theft and Identity Theft

San Diego County Crime Stoppers and investigators from the Santee Sheriff’s Station are asking for the public's help to locate an unknown suspect wanted in connection with stealing a truck and identity theft. 

Sometime between 11:00 p.m. on December 4, 2017, and 5:00 a.m., December 5, 2017, an unknown person stole a white, 1999 Ford F350 that was parked at the Walgreens Pharmacy, located at 9305 Mission Gorge Road in Santee. The owner of the truck left his debit card inside of the truck along with about $10,000 worth of tools locked inside of the tool box which was located in the bed of the truck. The debit card was used on December 5, 2017 several times in the Eastlake area of Chula Vista.

Unidentified Suspect Wanted for Sexual Battery

Up to $1,000 Reward Offered

San Diego County Crime Stoppers and investigators from the San Diego Police Department’s Child Abuse Unit are asking for assistance from the public to help identify and locate an unknown suspect wanted for a lewd & lascivious act with a minor under the age of 14 that occurred in the College Grove Mall area.     

On December 16th, 2017, at approximately 6:30 p.m., an unknown adult male grabbed the buttocks of a nine-year-old female inside the Ross store, located at 3450 College Avenue – College Grove Mall, while she was looking at toys with her three-year-old sister. 

Suspect’s Description: 

Due to the victim’s age, it is difficult to determine the suspect’s height, weight, and age; however, surveillance video inside the store captured the incident and the suspect appeared to be a white or light skinned Hispanic male, mid 20’s to 30’s, his height and weight are difficult to determine, but he appears to have a normal build.  

The suspect was seen on surveillance video wearing a dark colored baseball hat with a light colored emblem on the front, a dark colored long sleeved V-neck style sweater or shirt, black shorts, white socks, and black and white tennis shoes with white trim and a white design on the side. 

The suspect was at the College Grove Mall on December 16th, 2017, between 5:58 p.m. and 6:40 p.m. and was also seen inside neighboring stores, Target and Kohl’s.  It is possible the suspect was travelling in a dark colored sedan.

Wanted: Armed Robbery Series Suspects

Up to $1,000 Reward Offered

San Diego County Crime Stoppers and investigators from the Rancho San Diego Sheriff’s Station are asking for the public's help to identify and locate two unknown suspects wanted in connection with a series of armed robberies that happened between October – December 2017 in San Diego, Spring Valley, El Cajon and National City. The suspects in these robberies have been named “The Grinch Bandits.” 

The suspects entered each location in a similar manner.  Suspect #1 entered the targeted business, pointed a shotgun at the clerk and demanded cash while Suspect #2 took cash from the register.

Suspect #1 is described as a black male adult standing 6' tall and weighing about 175 pounds with an athletic build.

Suspect #2 is described as a black male adult standing about 5’9”.

Unknown Suspect Wanted for Felony Hit and Run

Up to $1,000 Reward Offered 

San Diego County Crime Stoppers and investigators from the San Diego Police Department’s Traffic Division are asking for the public’s help in identifying and   locating the driver that struck a pedestrian in the Mountain View area of San Diego.

On December 15, 2017, at about 8:24 p.m., a dark colored vehicle was traveling westbound on the 3700 block of Ocean View Blvd.  The vehicle struck a 33-year-old male pedestrian as he was walking northbound across the street near the intersection of Ocean View Blvd. and Milbrae Street.  The vehicle immediately fled the scene and was last seen traveling westbound on Ocean View Blvd.   

The pedestrian suffered a severe brain injury and remains hospitalized in critical condition.

The suspect’s vehicle is described as a dark colored 2008-2010 Scion TC.

20th Anniversary of the Unsolved Homicide of Bryan Carter and Vernon Bownes

San Diego County Crime Stoppers and investigators from the San Diego Police Department’s Homicide Unit are asking for the public’s help in identifying the suspects who murdered Bryan Carter and Vernon Bownes twenty years ago. 

On Wednesday, December 17, 1997, at about 11:00 p.m., Bryan Sean Carter and Vernon David Bownes were shot and killed while they were sitting at a picnic table in the front yard of a residence located in the 200 block of Francis Street, in San Diego.  Both victims suffered gunshot wounds to their heads and were pronounced deceased at the scene. 

Based on witness information, investigators believe two Black male suspects walked up to the victims and surprised them.  After the shooting, a Black male and Black female went through the victims’ pockets, removing several items.

Mustafe Mohamud is wanted by the San Diego Fugitive Task Force on a no bail robbery arrest warrant.

He has one prior criminal conviction for robbery and is known to frequent Lemon Grove and the mid-city area of San Diego.

Unknown Suspects Wanted for Burglary Series

Up to $1,000 Reward Offered  

San Diego County Crime Stoppers and investigators from the San Diego Police Department’s Northeastern and Eastern Divisions, along with investigators from the La Mesa Police Department, are asking for the public’s help in identifying and locating three suspects who are wanted for a series of residential burglaries. 

On August 13, 2017, at approximately 3:30 p.m., an unknown female rang the doorbell of a residence located in the 6300 block of Glenmont Street, in the Del Cerro area of San Diego. No one answered the front door. Two unknown males broke a rear sliding glass door, entered the home, and stole several items.   

Later that same day, at 4:30 p.m., the same female rang the doorbell of a residence located in the 5700 block of Jackson Drive, in La Mesa. The female asked the homeowner if “Tony” lived there. The homeowner told the female that she had the wrong house. The homeowner left the house and returned several hours later to discover his rear sliding glass door was shattered and three bedrooms had been ransacked. The suspects stole over $7,600 worth of jewelry and miscellaneous items. 

On August 29, 2017, at approximately 10:00 a.m., the same female and two males burglarized a residence in the 13000 block of Calderon Road in the Rancho Penasquitos area of San Diego. The suspects gained entry into the house by breaking a rear sliding glass door. The suspects stole numerous high end purses totaling over $10,000 in value.   

Suspect’s Description: 

The female suspect is described as Asian, in her 20’s, thin build, wears large black frame glasses, long bright green painted fingernails, and has a tattoo on her left forearm. 

Both male suspects are described as being Black, in their 20’s, approximately 5’8” tall, and had thin builds. The suspects are seen using a black Chrysler 200 with paper plates. The suspects may also be using a four-door white Mercedes.
