San Diego County Crime Stoppers and investigators from the San Diego Police Department’s Traffic Division are asking for the public’s help in identifying and locating the vehicle and driver that fled the scene of a traffic collision leaving an 81-year-old male pedestrian with fatal injuries in the Mountain View area of San Diego. 

On June 30, 2020, at about 7:20 p.m., 81-year-old Ruben Mendez was walking northbound in the marked pedestrian crosswalk in the intersection of South 45th Street and Logan Avenue. An unknown silver colored vehicle was traveling southbound on the 800 block of South 45th Street. The vehicle slowed down in the intersection and was preparing to make a left turn. The vehicle turned left onto Logan Avenue and struck Mendez, who was still in the crosswalk. The driver did not stop to check on Mendez and immediately fled the scene. The vehicle was last seen headed eastbound on the 4700 block of Logan Avenue. 

Ruben Mendez sustained major injuries as a result of the collision. Mendez was transported to a local hospital for medical treatment. On July 1, 2020, Mendez succumbed to his injuries. 

Investigators were able to locate surveillance images of the suspect’s vehicle. Investigators are asking the public to contact them if they can help identify the vehicle. 

Vehicle Description: 

The suspect’s vehicle is described as a silver colored 4-door sedan. The vehicle may have minor damage to the front passenger side bumper.
