Unsolved Murder of Gilbert Lee Johnson

UP TO $1000 REWARD

San Diego County Crime Stoppers and investigators from the San Diego Police Department’s Homicide Unit are asking for assistance from the public to help identify and locate the suspect responsible for the murder of 44-year-old Gilbert Lee Johnson.

On November 25, 2020, at 7:42 p.m., the San Diego Police Communications Center received multiple 911 calls of gunshots heard in the area of Varney Drive and Leaf Terrace Court in the Alta Vista area of San Diego. When patrol officers and paramedics arrived on scene, they found a male (later identified as Gilbert Lee Johnson) slumped over in a vehicle who had sustained at least one apparent gunshot wound. Johnson was transported to a local hospital for treatment but unfortunately, he did not survive his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the hospital.

Investigators from the San Diego Police Homicide Unit were called to the scene to handle the investigation. Based on the initial information, it appears Johnson was in the area talking to an acquaintance when another vehicle pulled up near him. An unknown suspect got out of his vehicle and fired several rounds at Johnson. The suspect then got back into his vehicle and drove away.

Suspect’s Description:

The suspect is described as an unknown race male, wearing all dark clothing. He was driving an older model white 4-door BMW sedan that has black mirrors and a moon/sunroof. The suspect was last seen driving away westbound on Varney Drive.
